A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a violent incident reportedly unfolded inside the cockpit, leaving the captain seriously injured.
The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying 174 people.
The captain, identified as Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar, was reportedly attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot while the aircraft was in flight.
During the confrontation, the aircraft plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, creating a serious emergency on board.
Despite his injuries, Captain Machchhar reportedly managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and help restrain the attacker.
Two off-duty Flydubai pilots who were among the passengers also assisted the crew in regaining control of the aircraft.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was subsequently diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The injured captain and co-pilot were taken to hospital, while all passengers were safely accounted for.
Captain Machchhar was later reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical treatment. Reports indicate that he has extensive Boeing 737 experience, including thousands of flight hours.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation and the actions of the co-pilot. Flydubai has urged caution against speculation while the investigation continues.
