Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is facing mounting questions over his future after his side suffered a humiliating 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 25.
The loss came just days after United were beaten 4-1 by Italian side Como in the Champions League, taking the number of goals conceded across the two matches to seven and intensifying concerns about the team’s defensive weaknesses.
Bournemouth took control of Sunday’s encounter with two goals in the closing stages of the first half. Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute, finishing at the far post from Justin Kluivert’s free-kick delivery.
Five minutes later, Marcus Tavernier doubled the visitors’ advantage after a defensive error by United defender Leny Yoro allowed Bournemouth to create another clear opportunity.
United struggled to recover after the interval, with Bournemouth continuing to exploit gaps in the home side’s defence. Evanilson eventually put the contest beyond the hosts in the 71st minute, taking advantage of goalkeeper Senne Lammens’ decision to rush off his line before finishing into an unguarded net.
The result left Manchester United with just seven points from their opening eight Premier League matches, having recorded one victory, four draws and three defeats. The club dropped to 16th position, just one point above the relegation zone, according to reports published after the match.
Carrick’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench throughout the encounter also attracted attention. The midfielder had reportedly questioned the manager’s tactical approach following the heavy defeat to Como, although Carrick maintained that his selection decisions were based on footballing considerations.
The pressure on the United boss has grown as the team struggles to produce consistent performances. Sunday’s defeat extended the club’s winless run to eight matches across all competitions, leaving supporters increasingly frustrated with the team’s direction.
Speaking after the game, Carrick acknowledged his responsibility for the situation and admitted that he did not know what would happen next regarding his future. He insisted, however, that he would continue doing his best for the club.
United defender Harry Maguire also expressed disappointment with the team’s performances, saying the players needed to examine their individual contributions and take responsibility for the club’s poor results.
With the Premier League campaign still in its early stages, Manchester United now face mounting pressure to arrest their decline. Carrick’s immediate future remains uncertain, while the club’s next fixtures could prove crucial in determining whether he can turn the situation around.
