An Akwa Ibom-based evangelist, Apostle John Okoriko, has urged President Bola Tinubu to take stronger action against Boko Haram, warning that the activities of the insurgent group could have serious consequences for Nigeria’s future if left unchecked.
Okoriko said the Federal Government must make proper use of the country’s available security resources and existing security agencies to confront the insurgents and restore peace, particularly in the northern part of the country.
The cleric made the appeal on Sunday during his monthly interactive session, which was held under the theme, “The Power of Belief.”
He argued that extremist religious teachings and harmful cultural practices were among the major challenges threatening Nigeria’s development. According to him, allowing such beliefs to spread could weaken the country’s institutions and undermine its future.
Okoriko expressed concern that Boko Haram’s opposition to Western education was particularly dangerous, noting that education remained a major foundation for technological advancement and economic growth.
He warned that Nigeria could struggle to compete with developed nations if insecurity continued to disrupt education and prevent young people from acquiring the knowledge and skills needed for national development.
The evangelist also called on Nigerians to maintain faith in the country despite the economic difficulties and security challenges facing the nation. He, however, stressed that the government must demonstrate its commitment to protecting lives and property.
He further warned that a country where citizens lose confidence in its future and respect for the rule of law could face serious instability.
Okoriko maintained that Nigeria’s survival and progress would depend largely on the government’s ability to confront extremist ideologies, protect education and create an environment where science, technology and economic development can thrive.
