Dangote Refinery Targets Global Refining Supremacy With 2028 Expansion Plan

Dangote Group is setting its sights beyond Africa’s refining market, with its Lagos-based petroleum refinery projected to emerge as the world’s largest by 2028.

The ambitious target was disclosed by the group’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote, on Monday at the preliminary signing ceremony for the proposed initial public offering of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals.

Dangote’s projection signals a new phase in the development of the multibillion-dollar facility, which has already positioned Nigeria as a major player in the global petroleum refining landscape.

The planned expansion is expected to significantly increase the refinery’s capacity, strengthening its ability to process crude oil and supply refined petroleum products to both domestic and international markets.

Beyond the size of the facility, the 2028 ambition underscores Dangote’s broader strategy of transforming the refinery into a major global energy hub, rather than limiting its operations to meeting Nigeria’s fuel demand.

The proposed IPO also marks a significant step in opening up the refinery’s ownership structure to investors, potentially providing additional capital to support its expansion and long-term growth.

Dangote said the refinery’s evolution would further enhance its contribution to Nigeria’s energy security while strengthening the country’s position in the international petroleum products market.
