The Delta State House of Assembly has thrown its weight behind the establishment of state police, unanimously approving a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow states to operate their own police services alongside the federal police.
The decision was reached during plenary on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when all 23 lawmakers present voted in favour of the proposed Sixth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution.
The proposal seeks to introduce State Police Services while retaining the Nigeria Police Force as the Federal Police Service, a move supporters believe could strengthen community-based security operations and improve responses to threats at the local level.
Following the vote, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, directed the Clerk of the House to formally transmit the Assembly’s resolution to the National Assembly for further legislative consideration.
The proposed amendment reflects growing legislative support for a policing structure that could enable security agencies to respond more closely to local realities through improved intelligence gathering and faster intervention when threats emerge.
Guwor also linked improved security to economic development, noting that a safer environment would boost public confidence, encourage investment and support economic activities in line with the Delta State Government’s MORE Agenda.
