The Department of State Services (DSS) has ordered an investigation into allegations by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that the agency planned to stage protests in Sokoto State, while rejecting the accusation as contrary to its security responsibilities.
The Service said its personnel had consistently provided protection to political figures irrespective of their party affiliations, citing an incident involving the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto, Mannir Daniya, according to Northern Nigeria Hub.
According to the DSS, its operatives rescued Daniya during an attack on October 31, 2026, and moved him to safety. The agency said the candidate escaped without injuries, although two of its personnel sustained injuries during the incident and remained hospitalised at the time of its statement.
It added that Daniya subsequently contacted the agency’s State Director in Sokoto to appreciate the intervention and request additional security personnel.
The Service also referenced the arrest and prosecution of Monday Udeme Steven, who was convicted and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Rivers State over threats against the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DSS said the examples demonstrated its commitment to protecting politicians across political divides, arguing that the allegation could undermine the morale of personnel exposed to danger while carrying out their duties.
However, the agency said its Director-General had directed an inquiry into Atiku’s claim in consideration of the former vice president’s standing.
