The Philadelphia Eagles are leaving open the possibility of keeping quarterback Jalen Hurts off injured reserve despite a blood clot that has sidelined him indefinitely, as medical assessments suggest his absence could stretch to six weeks.
Newsweek, in a report by TJ Macias published on October 17, cited ESPN reporting that Hurts is expected to miss at least four weeks, although doctors familiar with NFL medical issues but who have not examined him believe his recovery could take longer.
The uncertainty leaves the Eagles balancing their roster decisions against the need to ensure their franchise quarterback receives appropriate treatment before returning to action.
An NFL doctor told ESPN that the recovery period could depend on several medical factors, including the clot’s size and location and the findings of a haematological evaluation.
The Eagles have not ruled out placing Hurts on injured reserve, with the final decision expected to depend on medical advice and how his condition develops.
According to ESPN, the quarterback is receiving treatment, while the team is prepared to follow the recommendations of his medical team before determining when he can resume playing.
In the meantime, backup quarterback Tanner McKee is set to start against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, with rookie Cole Payton moving into the backup role.
The change presents an immediate challenge for Philadelphia as it prepares to navigate the upcoming game without its established starting quarterback.
Head coach Nick Sirianni offered little additional information about Hurts’ condition when he addressed reporters on Thursday, but emphasised that the player’s welfare remained his primary concern.
“I’m always concerned for our guys,” Sirianni said, describing his relationship with Hurts as particularly close after their shared experiences during the team’s successes and difficult periods.
He stressed that their bond extended beyond the usual coach-player relationship, underscoring the personal concern surrounding the quarterback’s health.
For the Eagles, the immediate priority remains Hurts’ recovery, while the duration of his absence and the possibility of an injured reserve designation remain unresolved.
The team’s next roster decision will depend on medical findings, leaving Philadelphia to prepare for the short term with McKee under centre as it awaits greater clarity on its starting quarterback’s return.
