The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a newborn baby boy who was abandoned in a nylon bag in Bwari Area Council of Abuja.
The baby was reportedly discovered on Monday, November 2, in a severely distressed condition, with visible injuries and bruises on his head, hand and arm.
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed the incident in a video message, where she was seen carrying and feeding the infant while explaining the efforts being made to save his life.
According to Adeh, the baby was in a critical condition when officers found him. He was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention, although he had to be monitored closely because of his condition.
She explained that the police were working to ensure the child received proper care before handing him over to the appropriate Social Welfare authorities.
The police spokesperson also appealed to residents of Bwari and surrounding communities to assist in identifying the mother of the abandoned child.
She urged anyone with information about a woman who was recently pregnant but is now without a baby to report such information to the nearest police station or Bwari Police Division.
Adeh also used the opportunity to appeal to mothers who may be unable or unwilling to care for their newborns not to resort to abandoning them in dangerous circumstances.
She advised such mothers to approach the police or Social Welfare offices, assuring them that assistance would be provided and that arrangements could be made to protect the children.
The police further encouraged members of the public with credible information about the incident to come forward, stressing that such details could help investigators identify the mother and establish how the baby was abandoned.
