A fire outbreak has caused significant damage to buildings in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, following a reported petrol tanker accident that allegedly triggered a fuel-related inferno.
The incident reportedly occurred around the Orogodo River, with thick smoke rising above parts of the community as the flames spread through the affected area.
Preliminary accounts indicate that the fire started after a petrol tanker was involved in a collision with another vehicle, causing it to rupture and spill its contents. However, the circumstances surrounding the accident have yet to be officially established.
Reports suggest that the spilled petrol flowed through a drainage channel towards the Orogodo River before catching fire. The flames allegedly travelled along the channel towards an area near an Anglican Church and Orogodo Primary School, spreading to nearby buildings.
Among the properties reportedly destroyed was Festy Chemist, a well-known medical store in the area. Other adjoining structures were also said to have been affected, although the full extent of the damage remains unclear.
As of the time of reporting, there was no official statement from the relevant authorities confirming the cause of the fire, the number of buildings destroyed or whether anyone was injured. Initial accounts suggested that no deaths had been recorded, but this information had not been independently verified.
A video circulating on social media reportedly showed the tanker engulfed in flames, highlighting the severity of the incident and the potential danger posed to residents and businesses in the vicinity.
The latest outbreak has renewed concerns over the risks associated with fuel tanker accidents in densely populated communities. Similar incidents have previously resulted in fatalities and extensive property damage in parts of southern Nigeria.
Agbor experienced another devastating tanker-related fire last year along the old Lagos–Asaba Road, an incident reportedly involving multiple casualties and the destruction of buildings.
Further information is expected as authorities establish the circumstances surrounding the latest incident and assess the damage caused by the inferno.
