Flamingos One Win Away From Ending Nigeria’s 18-Year Wait For U-17 World Cup Glory

Nigeria’s Flamingos have a chance to turn their remarkable comeback at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup into a historic triumph as they confront Japan in Saturday’s final, with victory set to deliver the country its first title in the competition.

Beyond the trophy, a win would make Nigeria the first African nation to reach the summit of both the men’s and women’s FIFA U-17 World Cups, giving the encounter significance far beyond the final score.

The Nigerian girls, who began the tournament with a 1-2 defeat to Poland, have steadily transformed from an uncertain side into one of the competition’s most formidable teams, eliminating some of its strongest contenders on their way to the final.

Their campaign gathered momentum with a 3-1 defeat of defending champions Korea DPR in the group stage, followed by a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 and a quarter-final success against Venezuela.

But it was their 3-1 demolition of Brazil in the semi-final that announced their title credentials most convincingly. The Flamingos dominated the encounter, registering 30 attempts on goal and leaving the South Americans struggling to contain their attacking pressure.

The team’s biggest strength has been its ability to find goals from different players. Their 12 goals in the tournament have been shared among eight players, with Oluebube Umejiaku leading the scoring with three, while Awawu Bashiru and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi have contributed two apiece.

Bashiru’s emergence has also highlighted the tactical flexibility of coach Hakeem Busari, who promoted the midfielder from a substitute role to the starting line-up against Brazil, a decision that paid off with two goals.

Captain Azeezat Oduntan has also provided leadership at crucial moments, notably converting a late penalty against Venezuela to help secure Nigeria’s passage into the semi-finals.

Standing between the Flamingos and the trophy are Japan’s Little Nadeshiko, a team with a formidable record in the competition. The Japanese have scored 150 goals across their tournament appearances, the highest tally by any nation, and are contesting their fourth final after winning the title in 2014.

Japan booked their place in the final after a dramatic semi-final against Korea DPR, forcing a 1-1 draw through a late own goal before prevailing on penalties. The Flamingos, however, will draw confidence from their attacking form and the resilience that has carried them from an opening defeat to the brink of a historic championship.
