Ghana Disputes FBI’s Account of Cybercrime Crackdown

Ghana has challenged the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over its portrayal of a multinational cybercrime operation, insisting that Ghanaian security agencies led the exercise.

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, raised the objection in a post on X addressed to FBI Director Kash Patel, stressing that the operation involved cooperation among security agencies from multiple countries.

George said Ghanaian law enforcement and intelligence agencies led the Cyberhunt operations, with support from the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and the FBI.

He warned that portraying the operation as an exclusively American achievement could undermine future cooperation in cross-border investigations and efforts to dismantle cybercrime networks.

The minister urged Patel to recognise the contributions of all participating agencies, arguing that acknowledging each partner’s role was essential to sustaining international cooperation against cybercrime.

The disagreement followed an FBI announcement on the dismantling of an international criminal syndicate accused of defrauding Americans. TVC News Online reported that Patel’s post on X highlighted the FBI’s role in the operation, prompting Ghana’s government to publicly assert its agencies’ leadership of the exercise.
