Ghana have parted ways with Carlos Queiroz less than a month after reappointing the Portuguese coach, following a difficult start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
According to a report by Channels Television, the decision followed Ghana’s 4-2 defeat to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, where the Black Stars surrendered a two-goal lead. The result came after an earlier 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast, leaving Ghana without a point from their opening two Group C matches.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced on Thursday that it had mutually agreed with Queiroz to terminate his contract. In a farewell message published on the association’s website, the 73-year-old said the circumstances surrounding the team, coupled with the recent performance, contributed to the decision. Ghana had taken control against Gambia through goals from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan before the visitors mounted a four-goal comeback.
Queiroz leaves with a record of one win, two draws and four defeats from seven matches, with Ghana scoring five goals and conceding 10. His association with the Black Stars began in April when he signed a four-month contract ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where he guided Ghana into the knockout stage after a win over Panama and a draw with England. The campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.
The GFA reappointed Queiroz on September 2 after his initial mandate ended following the World Cup, but his return lasted only a few weeks. Ghana now face the task of finding another coach while attempting to recover their qualifying campaign, with the Black Stars six points behind Ivory Coast and Gambia after two matches. Only the top two teams in the four-team Group C will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.
