Gospel Artist David Sunday Denies Kidnap, Arrest Rumours, Says ‘I Am Still Doing Music’ UYO — Gospel artiste David Sunday has broken his silence over what he described as persistent rumours of his arrest, imprisonment, death and alleged involvement in kidnapping, declaring that the claims were false and deliberately circulated by people he described as haters. Sunday, who spoke during an interview, said he had never been arrested or imprisoned and had not kidnapped anyone, insisting that he remains active in gospel music despite the rumours surrounding his name. “I did not kidnap anyone. I was never arrested and I was never in prison,” he said, dismissing the claims as unfounded stories designed to damage his reputation. The veteran gospel artiste said rumours of his death were equally false, stressing that he is alive and still pursuing his music career. According to him, the misinformation has not stopped his commitment to gospel music and the promotion of indigenous musical expressions. Beyond performing, Sunday said he had devoted considerable time to mentoring upcoming gospel musicians, claiming that he had trained and mentored more than 200 artistes across Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. He also claimed a pioneering role in the development of what is known as “Akam” gospel music in the two neighbouring states, describing the genre as part of his contribution to the growth and preservation of indigenous gospel music. Sunday disclosed that his professional music journey began in 2002 when he released his first track, marking the beginning of a career that has spanned more than two decades. Reflecting on support received during his career, the artiste said former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was the only political leader who had offered him financial assistance to advance his music. He, however, expressed disappointment over what he described as inadequate recognition and support for indigenous talents in Akwa Ibom State, arguing that many local creatives struggle because their contributions are not sufficiently valued. “A lot of indigenous talents have contributed to the cultural development of Akwa Ibom, but the people do not value them enough,” Sunday said. Despite the challenges and the rumours that have followed his career, Sunday maintained that he remains committed to gospel music and to mentoring younger artistes, saying his contribution to the indigenous gospel scene should be judged by his body of work rather than unverified claims about his personal life.
