Fear and confusion have engulfed Chanchanji community in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State following reports of an armed attack that has forced residents, including women and children, to flee for safety.
The incident, reported on Saturday, October 17, 2026, was allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen who invaded the community and opened fire. Residents said gunshots could be heard across different parts of the town, prompting families to escape into nearby bushes.
A resident who sent out a distress message described a frightening situation, claiming that the attackers had taken over parts of the community while sporadic shooting continued.
Residents also expressed concern over the reported absence of security personnel during the attack, saying they were struggling to protect themselves as the situation unfolded.
As of the time of the report, the number of casualties, the extent of property damage and the whereabouts of the attackers had not been confirmed.
Chanchanji and neighbouring settlements have experienced recurring violence over the past year, with previous attacks reportedly displacing more than 90,000 people from communities including Adu, Demeva, New-Gboko and Peva-Chanchanji. Some schools in the affected areas have reportedly been converted into camps for internally displaced persons.
The community also witnessed a deadly incident in July 2024, when its traditional ruler, Chief Tanimu Kunbiya, and his son were killed along the Takum-Chanchanji road.
Although troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, operating under Operation Whirl Stroke, have reportedly disrupted planned attacks in the area in recent months, concerns over the community’s security have persisted.
Community leaders had previously called for security personnel to be deployed to a newly constructed police station in Chanchanji, which residents say is yet to be fully staffed.
Residents are now appealing to the Taraba State Government and relevant security agencies to urgently intervene, restore order and prevent further loss of lives.
Note: The attack, casualty figures and security situation remain based on preliminary reports from the community and should be updated when official statements become available.
