Akwa Ibom State’s aviation sector has received a fresh boost with the arrival of a new Airbus A220-300, bringing to five the number of aircraft acquired for Ibom Air under the administration of Governor Umo Eno.
Eno formally received the aircraft with a water-cannon salute at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, as the State commenced activities marking its 39th anniversary. He said the latest addition would improve Ibom Air’s operational capacity while creating more opportunities for the State to deepen its presence in the aviation industry.
Beyond expanding the airline’s fleet, the Governor said the investment was also intended to develop indigenous manpower and position young Akwa Ibom people for careers in aviation. He disclosed that 14 of Ibom Air’s 30 pilots are indigenes of the State, while 20 others are currently undergoing cadet training in Ethiopia and Zaria.
“This is a month of gratitude. Today, we are here to welcome the Airbus. We are expecting growth in the aviation sector,” Eno said, adding that his administration would continue to support initiatives that equip young people with relevant skills and open new career opportunities.
The Governor also acknowledged the contributions of previous administrations to the development of the State’s aviation sector, pledging continuity in the expansion of Ibom Air. He commended President Bola Tinubu for granting international status to the airport, which he said had created the opportunity for direct international flights into Akwa Ibom.
The aircraft was flown into Uyo by Ibom Air Chief Pilot, Captain Rose Adebanwo, who said the A220-300 would introduce greater efficiency, advanced technology and additional operational capacity to the airline. Chairman of Ibom Air, Captain Mfon Udom, also commended the State Government for sustaining investment in the airline and growing its fleet.
Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who attended the ceremony with other National Assembly members, congratulated the Governor on the acquisition and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at advancing the State.
He commended the administration’s development efforts and its completion of projects inherited from previous governments, while the ceremony ended with the ceremonial cutting of the tape and a prayer of dedication led by Rev. Dr Godwin Amaowo.
