Ibom Air Puts New Airbus A220-300 On Lagos-Abuja Route

Ibom Air has deployed its newest Airbus A220-300 on the Lagos-Abuja-Lagos route, signalling another step in the airline’s ongoing fleet expansion and upgrade of passenger experience. The Akwa Ibom-owned carrier announced the development on its Facebook page, inviting passengers to be among the first to experience the new aircraft on the busy domestic corridor.

The airline described the aircraft as offering “more comfort, more space, bigger windows” and roomier overhead bins, saying the features were designed to make flying more enjoyable for passengers. It directed travellers to book through its official website or mobile application as the A220-300 begins regular service on the route.

The latest aircraft is part of a larger fleet expansion programme that dates back to 2021, when Ibom Air signed an agreement with Airbus for 10 brand-new A220 aircraft at the Dubai Airshow. The airline said it had initially tested the A220 through wet-leasing before selecting the aircraft for its domestic and regional growth plans. The first factory-new A220-300 from that order was delivered in 2023, while another A220 was acquired in 2024.

The latest delivery has taken Ibom Air’s active fleet to 10 aircraft, comprising seven Bombardier CRJ-900s and three Airbus A220-300s, according to recent aviation reports. The development further positions the airline, which began commercial operations in 2019, for expanded capacity as it strengthens its presence on Nigeria’s major domestic routes.
