The race for control of Oyo State in 2027 has gained momentum following the release of the final list of 16 governorship candidates by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The list, published on Saturday, October 10, 2026, confirms the participation of candidates from 16 political parties, setting the stage for a competitive battle for the Agodi Government House.

Among the prominent contenders are Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abimbola Adekanmbi of the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and Abdulrahman Oriyomi Hamzat of the Accord Party.

Other notable parties in the contest include the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The ADC will be represented by Taofeek Adegboyega Adegoke, while Akim Adebola Yusuf will contest under the NDC. The PDP has presented Hazeem Ola Gbolarumi as its candidate for the governorship election.

The remaining candidates on the list include Saheed Oladele of the African Action Congress (AAC), Kunle James Olatunji of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Gbolagade Tajudeen Salami of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Ismaila Akinboye Tijani of the Action Peoples Party (APP).

Other contenders are Kazeem Ayandoye Yinusa of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Idowu Adedeji Adeyemi of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), and Waheed Olanrewaju Azzan of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

With the final list now public, attention is expected to shift towards party campaigns, voter mobilisation and the policy proposals candidates will present to the electorate ahead of the 2027 poll.

The election will determine who succeeds the incumbent administration and leads Oyo State for the next term, with the 16 candidates seeking to convince voters that they have the leadership experience and plans needed to govern the state.

Remi Tinubu Seeks Second Term for Tinubu, Says Next Phase Will Deliver Prosperity First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, arguing that a second term would allow his administration to translate ongoing economic reforms into improved living conditions and national prosperity. She made the appeal on Saturday in Lafia, Nasarawa State, during a North-Central zonal mega rally organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rally support for Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and other party candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the First Lady, the administration’s economic policies are beginning to produce signs of stability, pointing to developments in the foreign exchange market and renewed interest from investors as indications of progress. She referenced the President’s Independence Day address, titled “From Reforms to Prosperity,” to explain the administration’s proposed direction for its next term, maintaining that continuity would be necessary to consolidate the gains recorded so far. Mrs Tinubu also praised the infrastructure drive of APC governors, describing the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of roads and other public facilities as significant achievements. She drew on her 12 years in the Senate to reinforce her assessment of the administration’s infrastructure efforts. On social welfare, she highlighted government-backed food support initiatives targeting children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. She said the programme was designed to improve access to nutritious meals and provide assistance for children experiencing malnutrition. The First Lady further noted that students were benefiting from the administration’s education funding programmes, urging party members to take information about these initiatives to their communities and explain the government’s policies to voters. She described President Tinubu as a leader prepared to make difficult decisions and expressed optimism that his policies would strengthen the economy and improve security if given another four years. Mrs Tinubu also called for a disciplined campaign, saying the APC women’s wing had aligned its efforts around a common message and would promote the party’s programmes without resorting to hate speech. She concluded by urging voters to support the President and APC candidates across all levels of government, presenting re-election as an opportunity to pursue economic growth, safer communities and improved national development. The rally was hosted by Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and attracted governors and other political leaders from across the North-Central region.
