Iran War Sends Oil Above $107 As Hormuz Crisis Threatens Global Economy

Global oil markets came under fresh pressure on Monday as crude prices climbed above $107 a barrel, with renewed attacks in the Gulf and uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz raising fears of a deeper disruption to one of the world’s most important energy corridors, The Independent reports.

The latest price surge followed Iranian attacks on ships in the Gulf and new strikes by Iran-backed Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia, adding to concerns that the conflict could disrupt oil supplies and push up fuel and transportation costs across international markets.

The economic stakes increased after US President Donald Trump suggested that American forces could remain in Iran and retain control of its oil, drawing a comparison with the United States’ reported arrangement involving Venezuelan oil. Trump also said he expected the war to end before the close of the year and predicted that gasoline prices would fall sharply once the conflict ends.

Trump’s remarks have added a new dimension to an already volatile energy market, as control over Iranian crude could become part of the wider geopolitical and economic consequences of the war. Iran is a major oil producer, while the Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy supplies, making prolonged disruption potentially costly for oil-importing economies.

Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions around the waterway also suffered a setback, with Oman postponing a meeting involving Iran and other regional countries that had been scheduled in Muscat to discuss the Strait of Hormuz. Oman said the postponement was made in the interest of reaching consensus.

The escalating crisis is already feeding directly into economic concerns, with higher crude prices threatening to increase the cost of petrol, transport, electricity and other goods and services if the disruption persists. The Independent reported that the latest oil jump came as the US-Israeli war with Iran entered a period of heightened uncertainty, with the unresolved Hormuz crisis leaving global markets exposed to further supply shocks.
