Kogi Police Corporal Allegedly Kills Female Colleague, Shoots Himself After Relationship Dispute

A police corporal attached to the Ajaokuta Division of the Kogi State Police Command allegedly shot dead his girlfriend, a fellow police corporal, before shooting himself with an AK-47 rifle following reported relationship troubles.

The officer, identified as Amos, allegedly attacked his girlfriend, Grace, at her quarters around 9 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026.

According to an account of the incident, Amos had resumed his assigned night-duty station guard at about 6 p.m. but allegedly abandoned his post hours later and went to Grace’s quarters.

He was said to have fired three shots at Grace before turning the rifle on himself.

The account claimed that Grace sustained gunshot wounds to her shoulder, lower abdomen and leg. The circumstances surrounding the shooting and the officers’ deaths are yet to be fully established by the police.

A source familiar with the officers’ relationship attributed the incident to disagreements that had reportedly worsened in recent months over trust issues and allegations of infidelity.

The source said the disputes had allegedly escalated into physical confrontations and threats, prompting an earlier intervention by the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO).

According to the source, both officers had previously been detained following their disagreements, after which the DCO reportedly advised them to end the relationship to prevent further conflict.

“The two junior police officers had been dating for some years now, but a few months ago, they started having trust issues and cheating allegations. There had been physical fights and threats to the extent that they were detained at some point by the DCO, who later advised them to end the love relationship for the sake of peace,” the source said.

It was not immediately clear whether the officers had ended the relationship following the intervention or what specifically led to Friday’s incident.

The spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement to The Punch on Sunday, saying the case was under investigation.

“We are aware of the incident, and the case is currently under investigation; we will update members of the public after the investigation is concluded,” she said.

The police are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident as the investigation progresses.
