The Federal Government has approved a six-month transport allowance of ₦70,000 monthly for public service workers, even as negotiations over the implementation date of the national minimum wage remain inconclusive.
The allowance, scheduled to take effect in November 2026, emerged from a conciliation meeting between the government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Tuesday, amid mounting pressure on workers from rising living costs.
Under the arrangement, eligible workers will receive the transport support for six months as a temporary measure to ease the financial burden of commuting and other work-related expenses.
The government also approved the settlement of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears dating back to May 1, 2026. The payments will be spread across three equal monthly instalments, beginning in November.
However, the concessions did not produce a breakthrough on the national minimum wage, with both parties failing to agree on when its implementation should commence.
To address the impasse, the government and labour leaders agreed to establish a Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee, which is expected to begin meetings immediately to work towards a resolution.
The outcome leaves workers with a temporary financial relief package and a repayment schedule for outstanding allowances, while the broader minimum wage implementation question remains pending.
