Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has singled out teenage winger Shea Lacey for his game-changing contribution in the club’s 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma, describing the youngster’s performance as a major lift for the team.
Lacey, introduced as a substitute, supplied the two assists that enabled Matheus Cunha to score twice and turn the contest around at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
The teenager’s influence extended beyond his attacking contribution, with Carrick drawing attention to his willingness to track back and undertake defensive duties despite his attacking role.
The manager said Lacey displayed confidence, technical quality and an eagerness to make an impression, adding that his presence brought renewed energy to his teammates.
Cunha also acknowledged the teenager’s contribution, expressing amazement at the quality of the pass that created one of his goals. He described the involvement of an academy graduate in such an important moment as particularly satisfying.
Reacting to the overall performance, Carrick said he was more pleased with the players’ achievement than relieved by the outcome. He explained that he understood the effort and commitment within the squad and was delighted to see their work produce such a result.
The Brazilian forward’s evening, however, ended with a dismissal in stoppage time. Carrick admitted that the sending-off was disappointing but maintained that he valued the passion and determination Cunha displayed during the encounter.
The manager’s remarks were shared on Wednesday by football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on X, as reported by Newsroom Nigeria.
