The Lagos State Government has announced plans to address blocked drainage channels in parts of the state, while urging residents to stop using waterways as dumping grounds.
The intervention follows observations made during the October environmental sanitation exercise, where officials reportedly witnessed residents disposing of refuse into canals and drainage channels, Vanguard reported.
Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said the Ministry of the Environment had been alerted to remove accumulated waste from affected waterways. He added that arrangements were being considered with relevant drainage authorities to rebuild critical infrastructure.
Agoro also called on local government chairmen and community leaders to take greater responsibility for environmental sanitation by mobilising residents and discouraging practices that obstruct water channels.
He maintained that the effectiveness of government efforts to improve drainage infrastructure would depend partly on residents’ willingness to adopt responsible waste disposal habits.
