Motorists travelling through Lagos Island should prepare for temporary traffic restrictions as repair works on Independence Bridge are scheduled to run from Friday night through Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The Federal Ministry of Works is expected to begin asphalt repairs on the bridge on Friday, October 16, with work continuing through Saturday and Sunday, according to a statement by the Lagos State Ministry of Works on Thursday, Channels Television reported.
The planned intervention will affect both inbound and outbound lanes, with sections of the bridge to be partially closed in phases. At least one lane will remain accessible to motorists as the repairs progress.
The Lagos State Government advised road users to consider alternative routes and plan their journeys ahead of the work to minimise delays.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will deploy personnel to manage vehicle movement and guide motorists through the affected areas. Drivers were also urged to obey traffic instructions and cooperate with traffic officials throughout the exercise.
