Lawyers Give EFCC 14-Day Ultimatum To Revive Alleged Atiku Fraud Case

A law firm has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) 14 days to reopen and prosecute alleged financial crimes involving former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, threatening legal action if the anti-graft agency fails to act.

Sagitarian Law Firm, acting for former House of Representatives member and ex-Code of Conduct Bureau member, Hon. Ehiozuwa J. Agbonayinma, made the demand in a petition dated August 27, 2026, asking the anti-graft agency to reopen investigations into allegations dating back to Atiku’s tenure as vice-president.

In the petition signed by the firm’s Principal Counsel, Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, SAN, MCArb, MNIM, the lawyers referred to an EFCC report issued in September 2006 which they said contained allegations of corruption, money laundering and other financial crimes involving Atiku.

The lawyers argued that nearly two decades after the report was released, the allegations have not resulted in the prosecution they said the EFCC had previously indicated would follow Atiku’s departure from office. They also cited a February 2010 report of the US Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which they said contained findings relevant to the allegations.

The firm described the continued absence of prosecution as a serious failure of the commission’s statutory responsibility and urged the current EFCC leadership to use the case to demonstrate that investigations involving politically exposed and high-profile individuals would not be abandoned.

It consequently demanded that the EFCC reactivate both the 2006 commission report and the cited US Senate report and take appropriate prosecutorial steps. The lawyers warned that failure or refusal to respond within 14 days would prompt their client to commence legal proceedings against the commission, setting the stage for a possible courtroom battle over the agency’s handling of the longstanding allegations.
