Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has directed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in regions covered by his Presidential Accountability Series to hold public accountability sessions twice a year.
The directive, issued through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on October 2, 2026, is intended to extend the accountability process to the local government level. The sessions are expected to be organised as town-hall engagements within the respective metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.
At the meetings, the local government heads will be expected to explain their assemblies’ progress on development plans, government programmes and projects, as well as the management of public funds. Areas listed for scrutiny include infrastructure, sanitation, education, healthcare, revenue generation, expenditure and youth-related programmes.
Residents and other stakeholders will also have the opportunity to question officials and seek clarification on issues affecting their communities. Traditional leaders, lawmakers, civil society groups, youth and women’s organisations, businesses, the media and other community representatives are expected to participate in the engagements.
The Regional Coordinating Councils will coordinate and monitor the exercise, while the ministry may participate in selected sessions as part of its oversight responsibilities. The affected assemblies have been instructed to begin preparations, with the timing of individual sessions to be communicated by the relevant Regional Coordinating Councils.
