Lionel Messi has admitted that saying goodbye to the Argentina national team is one of the most painful moments of his career, despite feeling that the time has come to step away from international football.
The Inter Miami forward brought his 21-year international career to an emotional close as Argentina defeated Benin 3-0 at the Monumental Stadium on Tuesday. Messi scored once and assisted two other goals in his final appearance for the world champions.
Speaking to supporters after the match, the 39-year-old reflected on the significance of representing Argentina for more than two decades, saying his attachment to the national team remains as strong as ever.
Messi acknowledged that leaving the team would be difficult, but said he was comfortable with his decision after the physical and emotional demands of Argentina’s most recent World Cup campaign. He recalled how the tournament tested the squad as they pursued another world title.
According to The Sun, Messi said he would have preferred to continue playing for Argentina indefinitely, describing wearing the national shirt as one of the greatest experiences of his life. He also promised to remain behind the team as a supporter, backing the players who will carry the national colours forward.
Messi’s final appearance at the Monumental carried additional significance, as the stadium was also the scene of Argentina’s first home game after their 2022 World Cup triumph. Reflecting on that connection, the veteran forward said his departure was painful but maintained that he had no regrets about choosing this moment to end his international career.
