Mourinho Faces Barcelona Test as Real Madrid Prepare for High-Stakes El Clasico

Jose Mourinho is set for a dramatic return to one of football’s fiercest rivalries as Real Madrid prepare to face Barcelona on Sunday, with the Portuguese manager tasked with halting the Catalan giants’ recent dominance in El Clasico.

The encounter at Camp Nou will be Mourinho’s first Clasico since beginning his second spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 63-year-old returns to a rivalry that defined much of his first tenure in Madrid between 2010 and 2013, when his confrontations with Barcelona became a major talking point in European football.

Mourinho’s previous reign was marked by intense exchanges with Barcelona’s then-coach Pep Guardiola, heated encounters between players and controversial incidents on the touchline. Despite the hostility surrounding the fixtures, he achieved a significant milestone in 2012 by leading Madrid to the La Liga title, ending Barcelona’s run of consecutive league championships.

One of the most controversial moments of that era occurred in August 2011, when Mourinho poked Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova in the eye during a heated confrontation. The rivalry also produced a memorable sequence of four matches between the two sides in just 18 days, featuring a league draw, a Real Madrid victory in the Copa del Rey final and Barcelona’s triumph in the Champions League semi-finals.

More than a decade later, Mourinho faces another formidable Barcelona side under Hansi Flick. Since the German coach took charge, Barcelona have won six of their seven Clasicos against Madrid, scoring 22 goals and conceding 11. Their recent record underlines the scale of the challenge awaiting the returning Madrid manager.

Mourinho has already shown signs of his familiar confrontational approach during his second spell. Following a defeat to Atletico Madrid, he presented printed evidence of incidents he believed warranted red cards, while he also declined to attend a press conference after Vinicius Junior was sent off against Villarreal. Critics have often viewed such actions as attempts to redirect attention away from his team’s performances.

However, Madrid’s recent results offer grounds for optimism, with the club winning their last four matches across La Liga and the Champions League. Mourinho has also begun adjusting his tactical approach, deploying Federico Valverde at right-back in recent games and experimenting with different midfield combinations to improve possession and attacking play.

The manager praised Valverde’s performance after Madrid’s victory over Leipzig, highlighting the opportunities created down the right flank. Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva have also featured in midfield as Mourinho continues to assess the best combination for his squad.

Despite the positive run, Mourinho has acknowledged that Madrid remain a work in progress. He said the team had improved in certain areas but admitted they were still some distance from reaching the standard he wanted after more than 100 days in charge.

Sunday’s showdown will therefore represent more than a contest for points. For Mourinho, it is an opportunity to challenge Barcelona’s recent superiority, establish his authority in his second Madrid tenure and revive a rivalry that once made El Clasico one of the most emotionally charged fixtures in world football.

Barcelona, meanwhile, will seek to maintain their advantage under Flick, leaving Mourinho with the task of finding a tactical solution to a side that has repeatedly troubled Madrid in recent meetings.
