National Assembly Receives Proposals for New LGAs Across Nigerian States

Proposals seeking the creation of additional local government areas have emerged from several parts of Nigeria, with submissions reportedly presented to the National Assembly as part of demands for changes to the country’s local administrative structure.

The proposals, published by Legit.ng, contain requests from states across the federation, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Benue, Kogi, Imo, Lagos, Rivers and Bayelsa, among others.

The requests cover a range of proposed councils, with some states seeking to divide existing local government areas while others have suggested new administrative units bearing the names of communities and traditional areas.

Among the proposals listed for Adamawa are Bidoma, Borrong, Yadim, Gurum, Giyawana and Michika South. Bauchi’s submissions include Boi-Tapshin, Dass West and Balma, while Borno’s list features Banki, Darajamal, Gulumba, Soye and Woloji.

Other proposals include Piriga in Kaduna State, Dankama in Katsina, Moriki in Zamfara, and several additional councils in Kogi and Nasarawa states. Imo State also accounts for an extensive list of proposed local government areas.

In the South-West, the proposals include additional councils in Ekiti, Ogun, Osun, Oyo and Lagos states. Lagos is listed as seeking 37 additional local government areas, while Bayelsa, Delta, Edo and Rivers feature among the southern states with proposed administrative changes.

The list also includes requests from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi and Cross River states, as well as proposed councils in Plateau, Niger, Jigawa, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.

The submissions reflect continuing calls for changes to local government administration in different parts of the country. However, the appearance of a proposed council on the list does not mean it has been approved or formally established.

Any creation of new local government areas must follow the constitutional procedures governing alterations to Nigeria’s local government structure.
