NCFRMI Seeks Akwa Ibom Displacement Assessment As Floods, Communal Clashes, Oil Spills Force Residents From Homes

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) is seeking a comprehensive assessment of internal displacement in Akwa Ibom State, following concerns over the impact of flooding, communal conflicts, oil spills and climate change on vulnerable communities.

The Commission is asking the state government to support an exercise that would establish the extent of displacement, identify the needs of affected residents and provide a basis for recommending appropriate interventions to the Federal Government.

The request was made on Tuesday, October 20, when an NCFRMI delegation met with officials of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in Uyo to discuss areas of collaboration.

The Commission’s spokesperson, Mr Eno Essien, said the findings would guide recommendations to the Federal Government and help the state meet the requirements for accessing relevant humanitarian assistance.

He also emphasised the need for effective follow-up to ensure that the assessment produces tangible results for affected communities.

Responding, the state Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs Emem Ibanga said Governor Umo Eno’s administration was ready to collaborate with the Commission to identify vulnerable populations and determine the support they require.

The commissioner noted that internal displacement in Akwa Ibom could arise from several circumstances, including environmental disasters and communal disputes that disrupt livelihoods and force residents to leave their homes.

Flooding, oil spills and climate-related disruptions were also identified as challenges requiring coordinated humanitarian responses, particularly where affected residents lose access to shelter, livelihoods and other essential needs.

The commissioner commended the NCFRMI delegation for its efforts to advance the assessment despite the challenges encountered, especially its guidance on the conditions for securing federal support.

The state government further stressed the need for a humanitarian strategic plan tailored to Akwa Ibom’s circumstances, with reliable data serving as the foundation for identifying affected communities and determining appropriate interventions.

Such interventions, the ministry noted, could include emergency assistance, livelihood support and resettlement where necessary, depending on the findings of the assessment.

The engagement highlights the importance of cooperation between federal and state authorities in addressing internal displacement and ensuring that communities affected by disasters and conflicts are not overlooked in the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
