Niger Set To Resume Jerusalem Pilgrimage For Christians In 2026

Niger State is preparing to send Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem in 2026, ending a suspension of general state-sponsored Christian pilgrimage that began in 2016.

Northern Nigeria Hub reported that the decision marks a return to the programme under Governor Mohammed Bago, following its discontinuation during the administration of former Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello. The previous government announced the suspension on May 17, 2016, citing financial constraints and insecurity in the Middle East.

To facilitate the planned trip, the Niger State Pilgrims’ Welfare Board is developing arrangements covering the selection, preparation and welfare of prospective participants. The proposed measures include registration across all 25 local government areas, screening procedures and orientation programmes before departure.

The board also plans to improve accommodation, feeding and other welfare provisions for pilgrims in the Holy Land. Its Christian Department is expected to coordinate with the Christian Association of Nigeria, church leaders and the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission in Abuja on preparations and flight arrangements.

These plans were discussed at a meeting of board members and Christian Department staff in Minna. Executive Secretary Muhammad Aliyu, represented by the Director of Administration, Ado Bello, used the engagement to emphasise cooperation between the board’s departments and alignment with the state government’s New Niger Agenda.

Bello said the Christian and Muslim departments shared a common responsibility for pilgrims’ welfare. Paul Lawrence, the Christian Department’s Director of Administration, outlined the proposed arrangements, while Deborah Salawu, head of the Christian board members, praised the management for bringing stakeholders together ahead of the exercise.

The board’s preparations are intended to ensure that the planned 2026 pilgrimage meets national requirements and that intending Christian pilgrims receive the necessary administrative and welfare support.
