Nigeria has been left with no active Ebola cases following the evacuation of an infected Swiss woman and her husband to Switzerland, although health authorities will continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the response.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, confirmed the development on Monday, October 26, 2026, saying the couple were airlifted to Switzerland earlier in the day for continued medical care and monitoring.
Janabi disclosed in a post on X that the woman was clinically stable after Nigerian medical personnel successfully managed her through the acute phase of the infection.
Her husband, also a Swiss citizen, was evacuated as a contact of the infected patient and is expected to undergo further monitoring in Switzerland.
The WHO official said Nigerian health authorities would continue following up on 52 contacts, while Swiss authorities would assume responsibility for the couple’s care and monitoring, bringing the number of identified contacts mentioned in the response to 53.
He commended the Federal Government, healthcare workers, clinicians, emergency responders and partner organisations for their contributions to containing the situation.
Janabi described the response as evidence of the importance of coordinated action during public health emergencies, noting that the successful stabilisation of the patient demonstrated the capacity of Nigerian medical personnel to manage critical infectious disease cases.
He also characterised the response as a demonstration of African expertise, resilience and leadership in public health.
Despite the absence of active Ebola cases in Nigeria, the continued monitoring of identified contacts remains important to detecting any possible further transmission and sustaining the gains made during the response.
