Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to increase electricity generation to at least 10,000 megawatts and make basic education free across the country if elected president in 2027.
Obi made the promises at a campaign rally in Bayelsa State, where he outlined some of his proposed priorities in the areas of power, education, road safety and national security.
He said his administration would work with state governments to ensure that children have access to free basic education, presenting education and electricity as critical areas requiring urgent attention.
On security, the former Anambra State governor vowed that kidnappers would have no hiding place under his government, particularly those involved in the abduction of schoolchildren.
He said he would not hesitate to enter the bush personally to help rescue kidnapped victims, stressing that abductions would not be tolerated.
Obi also used his journey to Bayelsa by road to draw attention to the condition and safety of Nigerian highways.
He said he had travelled from Enugu to Bayelsa, with stops in Lokoja, Akwanga and Ebonyi during the week, arguing that Nigerians should be able to travel safely on roads across the country.
The NDC candidate said the experience reinforced the need for a country where citizens could move freely without fear of attacks, kidnapping or other security threats.
He also criticised President Bola Tinubu over what he described as the President’s absence from Bayelsa and frequent foreign trips.
Obi’s comments come as insecurity, electricity supply, education and the state of public infrastructure are expected to feature prominently in campaigns ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
