The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that an ATR-42 aircraft crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State while carrying out a routine mission from Benin to Lagos, prompting an immediate search and rescue operation.
The incident occurred on Monday, with details of the crash still emerging as emergency personnel work to locate those who may have been affected. The NAF has not disclosed the number of people aboard the aircraft or confirmed any casualties.
The development follows earlier reports of an aircraft crash in the Ondo State riverine community. Initial accounts had given a different description of the aircraft, but the NAF’s statement subsequently identified it as an ATR-42.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, said in a statement that the aircraft was on a routine mission when the accident occurred.
“The aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.
“Search and rescue operations, in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies, are currently ongoing.”
The Air Force said further details would be communicated as the operation progresses, while efforts remain focused on the crash site and determining the condition of those on board.
