A passenger bus carrying 21 people crashed along the Oko-Olowo Expressway in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Sunday, leaving one person dead and several others injured.
According to a report by SaharaReporters, the accident occurred around Iye-Maja Junction after a tyre on the commercial vehicle reportedly burst while it was in motion. The driver subsequently lost control, causing the bus to somersault before it caught fire.
The Kwara State Fire Service said its response team was alerted to the emergency and arrived at the scene at about 6:35pm. Firefighters carried out rescue operations and evacuated passengers from the burning vehicle.
The injured victims were taken to a hospital for medical attention, while one person was confirmed dead in the crash. The Fire Service expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.
The Chief Fire Officer, CFS Alabi Muhammed, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy. He advised drivers to regularly inspect tyres, brakes, electrical systems and other critical components, noting that early detection of faults could help prevent serious road emergencies and loss of lives.
