Five miners have been killed and two others injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Saturday.
The attack, which occurred at about 1pm, has further heightened security concerns in the area already grappling with renewed violence.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed the incident, describing the killings as a painful development for the community.
A resident, Simon Mundat, also confirmed the casualties and appealed to the authorities to strengthen security around the community to enable residents pursue their legitimate activities without fear.
The incident occurred days after the Plateau State Government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Barkin Ladi and two other local government areas following attacks and killings.
The government, through the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, had condemned the attacks and urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
Meanwhile, security operatives working with local hunters reportedly repelled an attack by suspected terrorists on Latok community in Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area, forcing the attackers to retreat.
The development was reported by Daily Trust, which also noted that security officials contacted for comments on the Marit attack had not responded as of press time.
