Students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) are facing prolonged disruption of academic activities as industrial action continues at the institutions.

The disruption has drawn attention to reports that about ₦4.73 billion allocated to the two universities was not spent, even as workers complain of unpaid salaries, allowances and unresolved conditions of service.

At AAUA, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on strike over salary arrears and the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement. Non-academic unions, including SSANU, NASU and NAAT, later commenced an indefinite strike across Ondo State-owned universities.

The industrial action also affected the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, leaving lectures, examinations and other academic programmes disrupted. At AAUA, frustrated students reportedly protested by barricading roads around the institution and calling for an immediate resolution.

The financial situation has raised further questions because the state government had earlier approved ₦1.1 billion for AAUA to address outstanding salary obligations. Despite the intervention, concerns over payment and implementation of agreements reportedly persisted among university workers.

The government subsequently announced a 60 per cent increase in monthly subventions to state-owned tertiary institutions and said it would implement the Federal Government-ASUU agreement. The unions, however, maintained that implementation remained a major issue.
