Public servants have threatened to commence a three-day warning strike on October 2 if the Federal Government fails to address their concerns over petrol prices, workers’ welfare and the proposed review of the national minimum wage.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) has given the government until September 30 to respond to the demands, warning that failure to do so could trigger the industrial action.
The unions are seeking an immediate wage award for workers and want negotiations for a new national minimum wage to begin ahead of the 2027 review.
They are also demanding measures to bring down the cost of petrol to ₦500 per litre, alongside steps to reduce fuel landing costs and ensure crude oil is made available to local refineries on appropriate terms.
The workers said the high cost of petrol, which they put at between ₦1,450 and ₦2,000 per litre in many areas and as high as ₦2,500 in some locations, has increased the financial burden on public servants and their families.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has backed the demands, adding to pressure on the Federal Government to resolve the issues before the unions’ September 30 deadline.
