Six firearms and 58 rounds of ammunition have been recovered by the Rivers State Police Command following an operation that led to the arrest of four men suspected of involvement in armed robbery, kidnapping and murder.
Among the incidents under investigation is the killing of Joseph Onyeka in Rumuji Community on July 23, 2026, which the suspects reportedly confessed to during preliminary investigations, TVC News reported.
The police also linked the suspects to the shooting of Inspector Womoma, an officer attached to the command, at a checkpoint near Elele Alimini Junction along the East-West Road on August 4, 2026. The alleged gang activities reportedly extended to Choba, Elele Alimini, Emohua and Rumuekpe communities.
According to a statement issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the operation began on October 4 in Rumuekpe Community, Emohua Local Government Area, following intelligence gathered by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit. One of the suspects, Gideon Okah, was later apprehended in Owerri, Imo State.
The other suspects were identified as Chinemerem Uchewo, Michael Ishaka and Abdulahi George. Items recovered during the operation comprised two AK-47 rifles, two pump-action rifles, an English-made double-barrel rifle, a locally made revolver pistol and 58 rounds of live ammunition.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, praised the officers involved in the operation and directed the command to sustain efforts to dismantle criminal networks across the state. He also urged residents to provide credible information that could assist investigations, assuring them that information supplied would be treated confidentially.
The command said efforts were ongoing to track down other suspected members of the gang who remain at large.
