Cristiano Ronaldo has said he will remain available for Portugal for as long as he believes he can make a meaningful contribution to the national team.

The veteran forward revealed that he had considered ending his international career after the 2026 World Cup but changed his mind following discussions with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo said Portugal’s emerging generation also influenced his decision, explaining that he can still contribute through his goals, experience and leadership as younger players establish themselves in the team.

The Al-Nassr forward subsequently made his 234th appearance for Portugal against Wales at the José Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, the same venue where he began his senior career with Sporting.

Ronaldo did not score in the encounter, leaving his international tally at 146 goals. His overall career total also remained at 979 goals, keeping him 21 short of the 1,000-goal landmark.

The 41-year-old has made clear that his eventual departure from international football will depend on whether he still feels capable of helping Portugal rather than simply reaching a particular career milestone.
