Macklemore was dropped from the remaining US dates after making pro-Palestinian statements, including calls for a “Free Palestine”, during his opening sets at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The fallout has extended beyond Macklemore. Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe, who were also linked to the tour, subsequently withdrew, turning the decision involving one opening act into a wider dispute among artists associated with the concert series.
Sheeran has distanced himself from the decision, saying the rapper’s removal was made by the tour promoter after concerns were raised by stadium owners over his political comments. He has acknowledged having personal views on the Israel-Palestine conflict but maintained that he prefers his shows to remain focused on music rather than political disagreements.
That explanation has not ended the controversy, with critics questioning the extent to which Sheeran can separate his performances from a dispute involving an artist who was part of his tour and whose removal was linked to political speech.
The Philadelphia concert is now attracting attention beyond the music itself. Pro-Palestinian protesters are expected to demonstrate near the stadium, while authorities have indicated that security arrangements will be strengthened around the venue to protect concertgoers, staff and nearby residents.
Interest in the show has also been reflected in the secondary ticket market, where resale prices have reportedly fallen as the concert date approaches. However, market observers have cautioned that declining resale prices are common shortly before major events and cannot necessarily be linked to the Macklemore controversy.
Sheeran is proceeding with the Philadelphia performance and the remaining US dates, with Macklemore no longer part of the lineup.
