A prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Musa Lukuwa, was injured in a stabbing incident in Sokoto on Friday shortly after the conclusion of the Jumu’at prayer.

The incident has sparked tension in parts of Sokoto metropolis, with the circumstances surrounding the attack reportedly linked to allegations over comments attributed to the cleric concerning the biological parents of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

According to sources, the suspect confronted Sheikh Lukuwa after the Friday prayer over the alleged remarks before attacking him with a knife.

The cleric was reportedly wounded during the incident and taken to a hospital for treatment. His current condition, however, could not be independently established at the time of filing this report.

The situation subsequently escalated when some of Sheikh Lukuwa’s followers reportedly confronted the alleged attacker. The man was beaten and killed at the scene, according to sources.

The development has raised renewed concerns about the consequences of religiously sensitive allegations and the use of violence as a response to perceived offences.

It has also brought the issue of mob justice back into focus, with calls for allegations involving religious matters to be handled through established legal channels rather than through retaliatory violence.

The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that an incident occurred but provided limited information.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufae, acknowledged the incident but declined to disclose further details when contacted.

Meanwhile, several key details remain unconfirmed, including the identity of the alleged attacker, the severity of Sheikh Lukuwa’s injuries and the precise circumstances that resulted in the suspect’s death.
