The Sokoto State Government has increased the monthly allowance paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000, giving corps members an additional financial boost during their service year.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu announced the increase during the opening ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream Two orientation exercise held at the temporary NYSC camp at Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Farfaru Campus, Sokoto.
The governor also approved a one-time payment of ₦30,000 for each of the 1,523 corps members currently participating in the orientation programme. He directed that the new monthly allowance should take effect immediately.
On outstanding allowances owed to corps members, Aliyu disclosed that a committee had been established to examine the unpaid entitlements and determine how they would be settled.
In addition to the financial incentives, the governor announced the donation of a new Hilux vehicle to the NYSC state coordinator to support official activities. He also ordered the immediate restoration of water and electricity facilities at the temporary camp.
To improve feeding arrangements, the state government approved the supply of five cows daily throughout the orientation exercise. Aliyu further announced cash rewards of ₦1 million for winners of the crocodile race and ₦500,000 for those who finish as runners-up.
He assured the corps members of adequate security and support throughout their service year, urging them to respect the rules of the NYSC scheme and contribute meaningfully to national unity and development.
Speaking at the event, the NYSC State Coordinator, Tyoyer Gabriel, revealed that 1,523 corps members had arrived at the camp out of the 2,100 allocated to Sokoto State.
Gabriel appreciated the state government for its continued assistance, particularly its efforts towards renovating the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko.
The ceremony featured a parade, the administration of the oath of allegiance and other activities marking the formal commencement of the corps members’ orientation programme.
