A legal battle is brewing in Sokoto State over the report of a commission of inquiry into the eight-year administration of former Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
Tambuwal, now the senator representing Sokoto South, has approached the Sokoto State High Court seeking access to the findings and recommendations of the panel established to investigate his tenure from 2015 to 2023.
The former governor is asking the court to compel the state government to provide him with a copy of the report, arguing that he needs to know whether the commission made any adverse findings against him and, if so, respond appropriately.
Arise News reported that the suit, numbered SS/133/2026, was filed before Justice Mohammed Mohammed of the Sokoto State High Court 6. Tambuwal named Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and the Sokoto State Commission of Inquiry as defendants.
The commission, headed by former Gombe State Chief Judge, Justice Mu’azu Pindiga, was constituted by the Aliyu administration to examine the previous government’s activities, financial dealings and other related matters. Tambuwal maintains that his participation in the proceedings gives him a right to know the outcome of the inquiry.
He is also relying on the principles of natural justice and fair hearing, arguing that access to the report would enable him to defend himself against any unfavourable conclusions. The court has scheduled November 9, 2026, for hearing of the case.
