Taylor Swift has become the most decorated artist in MTV Video Music Awards history after taking her career tally to 31 trophies at this year’s ceremony.
According to Channels Television, the pop superstar broke her tie with Beyoncé, who had also won 30 VMA awards, after receiving the inaugural Artist Director Honors for her work in visual storytelling.
Swift also claimed the Video of the Year award, which she dedicated to late country music legend Dolly Parton.
In her acceptance speech, Swift praised Parton’s songwriting and storytelling, while describing the late singer’s approach to fame as one marked by grace, love and gratitude.
Swift also premiered the music video for her latest single, “Patient Zero”, featuring actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The song centres on a troubled relationship and a warning to another woman about her partner.
However, Swift missed out on the Artist of the Year prize, which went to Madonna. The veteran pop star also opened the ceremony alongside Sabrina Carpenter before performing with Charli XCX.
Nirvana, meanwhile, received the Video Vanguard Award, becoming the first group in more than two decades to receive the honour. Bassist Krist Novoselic said the band continues to resonate with audiences because of its authenticity.
Thai singer LISA, a member of Blackpink, won Best Pop for “Dream”, featuring Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi, while Kacey Musgraves led a tribute to Dolly Parton.
The ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and aired on CBS and MTV, combining musical performances, tributes and award presentations.
