A disagreement over a proposed rent increase has reportedly turned violent in Benin City, Edo State, after a tenant allegedly smashed his landlord’s head during a confrontation.
The incident, which has attracted attention on social media, followed a dispute over renovation work carried out by the tenant in the apartment where he operates his business.
In a video shared by Edo TV on Friday, October 30, the tenant gave his account of what led to the confrontation, claiming that trouble started when the landlord questioned him about the tiling work he had done at his own expense.
According to him, the landlord not only demanded additional payment for the renovation but also announced plans to increase his annual rent from ₦300,000 to ₦1 million.
The disagreement reportedly became heated, with the tenant alleging that his landlord slapped him during the argument.
He claimed he reacted by striking the landlord on the head, although he maintained that he did not intend to cause such serious harm.
“He slapped me first and out of my defence, I smashed his head. It wasn’t intentional,” the tenant said in the video.
The confrontation reportedly left the landlord with serious head injuries.
The incident has since sparked reactions online, with the circumstances surrounding the rent dispute and the violent response drawing public attention.
