THREE PRESIDENTS IN A’IBOM: WHAT IS DRAWING AFRICA TO UYO?

By Emma Akpabio

What would bring two former Nigerian presidents, a former Botswana president and some of Africa’s distinguished minds to Uyo on the same day? Beyond the prestige of their presence, what does their gathering reveal about Akwa Ibom’s growing ambitions?

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi and renowned political economist, Prof Pat Utomi were among the distinguished personalities who converged on Uyo for the unveiling of the C54 News Streaming Dome at the 21-storey Udom Emmanuel Towers.

Interestingly, unlike in years past, when the arrival of a former president or prominent national figure in Uyo would dominate public conversations for days, the gathering did not overwhelm the state’s attention in quite the same way. Perhaps that is part of the story.

As Akwa Ibom continues to attract significant personalities, investments and ventures, such visits may gradually become less extraordinary. The state gradually becoming the destination of choice, is gradually moving towards a point where the presence of distinguished visitors is no longer the biggest story; what they come to establish, support or experience matters even more.

The question, therefore, is no longer simply who is visiting Akwa Ibom, but what is drawing them here and what their presence could mean for its future.

The attraction is not difficult to understand. Improved road connectivity, relative peace, air links and growing infrastructure provide a foundation for investment.

The possibilities will surely expand further as projects like the Arise Palm Resort, the Ibom multi Storey international hotel, Ikot Ekpene international market, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, Medical Village and ongoing 5,000-capacity convention centre advance. Truth be told, these developments will strengthen the state’s appeal as a destination for business, tourism, conferences and enterprise.

The C54 News Streaming Dome only offers a glimpse of that potential.

With ambitions to tell African stories to audiences across the continent and beyond, C54 News seeks to establish a media platform with an African outlook and global reach. Its streaming hub in Uyo places Akwa Ibom within an emerging network of news, documentary production and digital broadcasting.

As Governor Umo Eno observed during the ceremony, the significance of such a development would extend well beyond the unveiling. Cities that host influential media organisations often gain international visibility and opportunities to grow their creative industries.

London is synonymous with the BBC, Atlanta is closely associated with CNN, Doha has gained global media prominence through Al Jazeera, while Lagos remains a major centre of Nigerian broadcasting, home to Channels Television, Arise News, TVC, amongst others.

These examples demonstrate how media brands can help project the identities of their host cities while creating opportunities for professional development, employment and related businesses. If C54 News fulfils its ambitions, Uyo would strengthen its profile in Africa’s media landscape and create new opportunities in broadcasting, cinematography, digital technology and content production.

The benefits will extend to local businesses in hospitality, transportation, catering and event management. More importantly, the venture will give young people opportunities to develop careers in the creative and digital economy without having to look exclusively beyond their borders.

The choice of Udom Emmanuel Towers as the home of the streaming facility adds another dimension to the story. For years, the imposing structure stood among the state’s most debated infrastructure projects. Its new use offers an opportunity to reconsider the value of infrastructure beyond the controversies surrounding its construction.

What if the tower had never been built? Would Akwa Ibom have had this befitting space for an initiative with continental ambitions?

The question is worth asking. Infrastructure is not defined solely by the criticism it attracts or the moment it is completed, but also by the productive activities it can accommodate over time. A building acquires greater economic value when it supports an enterprise, creates jobs and opens doors for others.

The lesson is not that public projects should be exempt from scrutiny. Rather, citizens must balance accountability with a willingness to recognise possibilities as infrastructure finds new uses. We must learn to question leadership responsibly without dismissing every vision before its potential is realised.

Governor Umo Eno is committing substantial resources to infrastructure development across Akwa Ibom. As these investments mature, the state’s young people must prepare themselves to participate in the opportunities they may create. Roads, buildings and facilities alone cannot guarantee prosperity; skilled people are needed to turn them into productive assets.

The challenge is urgent: acquire skills in broadcasting, filmmaking, graphics, digital technology, engineering, hospitality and other fields relevant to the state’s evolving economy. What is the value of an opportunity if, when it arrives, our people are not equipped to seize it?

Without the requisite skills, Akwa Ibom’s young people risk becoming onlookers in an economy developing around them. With the right preparation, they can become the professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators driving that development.

The unveiling of the C54 News Streaming Dome has come and gone. The distinguished visitors will return home, the cameras will be packed away and the headlines will eventually fade. What matters now is what remains.

Will the facility create jobs, train local professionals, attract complementary businesses and establish lasting partnerships? Will Akwa Ibom talent become part of its operations? The answers will determine whether the unveiling remains a memorable ceremony or becomes a meaningful chapter in the state’s economic story.

Akwa Ibom has an opportunity to expand its identity beyond its natural resources and physical infrastructure to include knowledge-based enterprise, media production and creative innovation. C54 News could contribute to that transition, provided its ambitions translate into sustained activity and tangible benefits for the people.

Ultimately, the state’s new horizon will not be defined simply by the prominence of those who come calling, but by the enterprises that take root, the opportunities created and the readiness of its people to benefit.

The world may be looking towards Akwa Ibom. The question is whether Akwa Ibom’s people will be ready when the opportunities knock.
