Trump Announces Plan To End $4bn US Military Aid To Israel By December

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to end America’s annual military assistance to Israel by the end of 2026, arguing that the country is now financially and militarily capable of meeting its own defence needs.

Trump made the announcement during an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, November 3, where he questioned the continued justification for providing billions of dollars to Israel, particularly as the issue has become increasingly controversial in American politics.

According to the president, the United States gives Israel about $4 billion annually, despite the country no longer depending on the assistance. He also suggested that continued funding has become a political burden for Republicans, with Democratic candidates using America’s support for Israel to challenge their opponents.

The proposed move would mark a major shift in the longstanding military relationship between both countries. Under an agreement signed in 2018, Washington committed to providing Israel with $3.8 billion in annual military assistance over a 10-year period, with the arrangement originally scheduled to expire in 2028.

Although Trump said he had discussed ending the financial support with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he did not provide details of any formal agreement between the two governments. The White House and Netanyahu’s office had yet to publicly clarify the announcement.

The development has also raised questions about the future of US-Israel relations, especially as tensions in the Middle East remain high and the possibility of another confrontation with Iran continues to concern security officials.

Some former American officials have expressed doubts about whether the Trump administration would completely withdraw the assistance, particularly if Washington becomes involved in renewed military operations against Iran.

Aaron David Miller, a former Middle East negotiator for several US administrations, observed that support for Israel has increasingly divided the Republican Party, with some influential figures within the MAGA movement questioning the benefits of maintaining such a close relationship.

The announcement has also created political complications for Netanyahu, who recently received Trump’s endorsement during Israel’s election campaign and is currently working to secure a governing coalition.

Gadi Eisenkot, Netanyahu’s political rival, criticised the Israeli prime minister over the development, arguing that such an important change in the country’s security relationship with Washington should not have come as a surprise through a public announcement.

He maintained that the United States remains central to Israel’s national security and accused Netanyahu of damaging a strategic relationship that previous Israeli governments had worked hard to maintain.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu had previously indicated that Israel would eventually have to reduce its dependence on American military assistance. In comments made shortly before Israel’s election, he suggested that the country should prepare for a future without the billions of dollars it has received from Washington.

Trump, however, insisted that Israel could continue purchasing whatever weapons and military equipment it requires, suggesting that ending the assistance would not necessarily prevent the country from accessing American arms.

The United States has continued approving major military deals with Israel during Trump’s second administration. In September, Washington authorised a $2.8 billion sale of heavy bombs to the country.

Yair Golan, leader of Israel’s Democrats party, described Trump’s announcement as a major failure for Netanyahu, arguing that a responsible prime minister should be working to strengthen American military support rather than allowing it to disappear.

Whether Trump’s declaration will translate into an actual policy change remains uncertain, but the announcement has already intensified debate over the future of America’s military commitment to Israel and the political consequences of that relationship.
