US President Donald Trump has responded derisively to Iran’s proposal for reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, posting a map on his Truth Social platform that labels the waterway “Trump Strait” as diplomatic efforts to end the standoff remain uncertain.

The move came after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi outlined a seven-day framework under which Tehran would restore normal maritime passage through the strait and resume negotiations over its nuclear programme, provided Washington meets a series of conditions.

Under Tehran’s proposal, the United States would have to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waive sanctions on Iranian oil exports and observe a ceasefire covering the wider region, including Lebanon. Iran has also linked the process to the resumption of nuclear talks. (Al Jazeera⁠)

Araghchi said the proposed timetable would begin once Washington accepts the arrangement, with initial US measures expected within four to five days, reopening of the waterway on the sixth day and the start of negotiations on a final agreement on the seventh.

“The choice now rests with the United States,” Araghchi said, insisting that Tehran had prepared the necessary steps for restoring maritime traffic if Washington agreed to the conditions.

The proposal places the Strait of Hormuz at the centre of the latest diplomatic confrontation because of its importance to international energy supplies. Before the conflict, about a fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas passed through the waterway, making its disruption a major concern for energy markets and import-dependent economies. Reports indicate that the Trump administration has remained sceptical about Tehran’s proposal, with US officials cited as saying Washington does not believe Iran would necessarily comply with the terms of any agreement. The episode also fits a broader pattern in Trump’s use of alternative geographical names to make political points. During his second term, he ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be referred to by his administration as the Gulf of America and restored the name Mount McKinley for Alaska’s Denali.

For Iran, however, the immediate issue remains the reopening of the waterway and the conditions attached to it, rather than the symbolic renaming displayed on Trump’s map.
