US President Donald Trump has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring the war in Ukraine to an end, as fresh Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities add pressure to efforts aimed at securing a limited ceasefire.

According to The Independent, Trump made the appeal while speaking to reporters after arriving in New York on Tuesday for the United Nations General Assembly. Asked what message he had for Putin, the US president urged him to “settle the war.”

The appeal came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in New York for talks with Trump and other world leaders. A proposed energy truce is expected to feature prominently in the discussions, with Kyiv seeking an arrangement that would stop attacks on energy infrastructure and other critical facilities.

Despite the diplomatic push, Ukraine has continued striking Russian energy assets. Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had hit two additional refineries within 24 hours, while Ukraine’s General Staff identified the facilities as the Bashneft-UNPZ and Kuibyshev refineries.

Zelenskyy has said Kyiv would be prepared to halt attacks on Russian energy facilities if Moscow stops targeting Ukraine’s energy sector, critical infrastructure and food-export routes. The position places the proposed truce on a reciprocal basis rather than requiring Ukraine to suspend its attacks unilaterally.

Meanwhile, Russian missile and drone attacks have continued across Ukraine, with strikes reported in several regions and casualties recorded. The continuing exchanges have also raised concerns about the potential impact on Ukraine’s power and heating infrastructure as winter approaches.
