The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has rejected the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s call for an indefinite strike, directing its affiliates and members to continue their normal duties.
The disagreement follows the NLC’s directive asking public and private sector workers in the FCT to begin an indefinite industrial action on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, over a dispute between the FCT Administration and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
TVC News reported that the TUC FCT Council said it was neither consulted nor involved in the decision to declare the strike, stressing that it had not participated in the meeting where the directive was adopted.
The council instructed its affiliate unions to ensure their members continued working and warned against attempts to intimidate or compel them to participate in the industrial action. It also said union leaders should disregard instructions to form strike enforcement committees unless they originated from the TUC FCT leadership.
The council called for calm and a negotiated settlement, expressing concern about the consequences of the dispute for teachers, pupils and other workers. It maintained that dialogue and established industrial relations procedures offered a better path to resolving the disagreement and avoiding further disruption to education in the territory.
